Basmati Rice Nursery: Transplanting Age, Weed Control and Zinc

Strong nursery means strong Basmati crop

For Basmati areas around Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Hafizabad, and Sialkot, nursery quality decides how quickly the transplanted crop recovers. Weak nursery plants reduce tillering and make weed pressure harder to manage.

Nursery preparation

• Soak seed for 24 hours, then incubate until sprouting starts evenly.
• Prepare raised nursery beds with clean water movement and no standing stagnant patches.
• Use treated seed to reduce seedling blight and early root problems.

Transplanting age

• Transplant seedlings at 25 to 30 days for better recovery and tillering.
• Keep 2 seedlings per hill and maintain roughly 9 inch spacing where field leveling is good.
• Avoid over-aged nursery because it delays new tillers after transplanting.

Weed and zinc management
