"This guideline is verified by Punjab Agricultural Extension Services to foster maximum tillering and safeguard heavy bolls against common fungal outbreaks."
Wheat planning before drilling
Wheat is the crop where small timing mistakes become visible at harvest. A good Punjab plan starts with clean seed, correct moisture, balanced phosphorus, and nitrogen split across the first two irrigations.
Best sowing window
- Target 1 November to 25 November for most irrigated Punjab fields.
- After 10 December, increase seed rate and avoid weak seed because late heat shortens grain filling.
- Keep seed depth close to 1.5 to 2 inches; deeper seed gives uneven emergence.
Seed and treatment
- Use certified varieties such as Dilkash-20, Faisalabad-08, or locally recommended rust-tolerant seed.
- Use 50 kg seed per acre for timely sowing and 60 kg per acre for late sowing.
- Treat seed before drilling to reduce loose smut, seed rot, and weak stand patches.
Fertilizer schedule
- 1At sowing, apply 1.5 bags DAP per acre or the equivalent phosphorus plan advised by soil test.
- 2At first irrigation, usually 20 to 22 days after sowing, apply 1 bag Sona Urea per acre.
- 3At second irrigation, apply half bag Urea where the crop has active tillering and good moisture.
Field checks after emergence
- Count plant population in weak patches and re-drill only where gaps are large.
- Watch yellowing leaves; it can be water stress, zinc deficiency, or nitrogen shortage.
- Start rust scouting from late January, especially after foggy and humid nights.
